‘08 Softball Season Preview

March 27th, 2008 by Amanda Banas

The 2008 Season is looking to be very exciting and promising for the Womens Fighting Illini softball team. The team is returning their top 3 homerun hitters from last season- Lana Armstrong, Shanna Diller, and Angelina Mexicano. The freshman class has also been working very hard during fall ball and off season and will be key components to this Illini team. The ladies face an extremely competitive 2008 schedule, facing 8 teams that played in the ‘07 Super Regionals. Although Big 10 season doesnt start until March 30th, they face topnotch competition in the South Florida Tournament, Louisville Sluggers Desert Classic, and the Aggie Classic in Texas until then.

2008 Season Preview

July 11th, 2007 by Amanda Banas

The Fighting Illini have a lot to look forward to for the upcoming 2008 season. The team will consist of six seniors, including: McKenzie Smith, left field, Angelina Mexicano, short stop, Shanna Diller, third base, Katie Gaitros, Sarah Breyers, center field, and Claire DeVreese, pitcher. The team will be led by three senior captains: Breyers, Diller, and Mexicano. Last season, the Illini were arguably the most exciting team to watch due to the fact they led the country in homeruns per game. Returning players shattered previously held team records while also challenging Big Ten records. This team remains almost entirely intact, with the defensive line up looking nearly identical to that of last season. The only exceptions being first and second base, after graduating Kisten Martin and Molly Lawhead. In 2008, Illini softball will once again challenge previous team and conference records, planning for a Big Ten championship season.

Michigan St & Michigan

July 5th, 2007 by Lunani Yen

After over a week of games being cancelled due to rain, snow, and cold the Illini took the field with hot bats Friday vs. Michigan St. Shana Diller started things off quickly with a solo home run in the first. She followed this with a grand slam in her next at bat. She then hit another homerun in the 2nd game of the double header, tying her with Jenna Hall for the Illini Single Season Record. Shanna wasn’t the only one going yard, as Illini batters teamed up for 9 big flys. Angelena Mexicano and Sidney Lisey joined in on the fun in the first game, and Makenzie Smith, Lana Armstrong, and Sarah Bryers joined Mexicano and Diller with round trippers in the second game. Oh yea, and the Illini won both games 9-6.

Sunday started off ugly against the #8 Wolverines. Illinois committed 5 errors while only collecting 4 hits off Michigan’s star pitcher in a 5-0 loss. The second game seemed to be much of the same as the Wolverines took a 3-0 lead into the 7th. After a Sarah Bryers walk, Hope Howell made it to third base on a throwing error to first, then Shanna Diller hit a majestic game tying homerun. In the 8th Illinois got the leadoff girl aboard, and with two outs Sarah Bryers hit her 4th home run of the year for the game winner. Final Score 5-3 in 8.

Current Record 26-15 (5-3 Big Ten)
